Fifteen

Finally, Sunny found her voice. "That's her. The one who was working that day and who I ran into coming out of the mens room."

The librarian looked around, her lenses glimmered as her gaze stopped on various vehicles on the street, including Cace's truck before moving on.

Sunny sank a bit in her seat.

“Don’t worry,” Cace said. “We’re far enough away that she won’t see two people in dark clothes in a truck with dark tint.”

Sunny breathed a sigh of relief and refocused on their target. Libby continued to the hood of her car, pulled it up and grabbed a duffle bag before scurrying into the back of the library.

"Well that was suspicious," Sunny said. "Who would've thought someone who looked like her would try to run me down?" Never in a million years. It didn't need to be said that the likelihood of two vintage yellow Volkswagon Beetles in the Belton-Killeen area would be astronomical. This couldn't possibly be a coincidence.

"It wasn't her. It was a man driving yesterday."

She slid straight up in the leather seat. "What? Why didn't you tell me that?"

"Didn't come up."

"What else didn't come up?" The question, sharp and accusatory.

Cace froze for a moment, then turned his dark gaze to her. "Nothing, Sunny. I didn't think of it until now, but I remember seeing a man behind the wheel. Hat pulled low. I couldn't see his face."

Sunny's fingers drummed on her thigh below the hem of her dark shorts. Where did the snappish insecurity come from? Duh. From when he left Dew Drop without telling her. She should apologize. His attempt at 'protecting her' yesterday still rankled. But he'd apologized and together they came to an agreement on how to proceed. Well, she listened and agreed, but at least he'd sought her opinion. Dern it. She should apologize. "Cace, I'm so—"

"She's leaving."

Already? She’d just gotten there. "Why would she do that?"

"It's only eight-thirty. The library doesn't open for another hour and a half."

"Are we going to follow her?"

His face hardened to granite. "Oh yeah."

The Bug reversed from its spot, then shot off down the street behind the library.

Finally, a clue.

Cace started his truck and pulled forward. A yellow flash indicated it made the corner going south. Cace made the same turn. The small car hung a right. Cace followed it again. And again. And again, staying back. Then a little closer.

Her stomach knotted. "Surely she sees you by now."

A grim smiled haunted his lips. "Maybe, but I doubt it. You'd be surprised how many times surveillance units believe they've been burnt when the target had no idea they were being followed. But pull up the GPS map on your phone anyway."

She grabbed her phone from the cupholder. "Why?" A couple of taps and the street map appeared.

"I need to know where I can parallel her to get out of her rearview mirror so we don't get burnt. There's no one else to take over the eye."

What? "The eye?"

"Short for ‘eyeball’, the one who can see the target and call out the car's actions to the rest of the team.
